Canada launches a $100M carbon removal coalition to scale the industry, even as Microsoft’s sudden buying pause creates new market ripples

Canada has quietly built one of the most sophisticated carbon dioxide removal ecosystems on the planet. With 78 companies currently operating across the provinces, the industry is moving from experimental lab work to industrial-scale ambition. This evolution reached a milestone on March 5 with the launch of the Advance Carbon Removal Coalition. Backed by the federal government and giants like Shopify and RBC, the group aims to funnel $100 million into the sector by 2030.
The momentum is visible in the numbers. Current capacity sits at 107,000 tonnes annually, but developers have their sights set on a massive 10.9 million tonnes as new projects come online. This growth is fueled by Canada’s natural toolkit: vast geological reservoirs for storage and a grid powered by hydro and nuclear energy. If the nation manages to scrub just 15 percent of its annual emissions, the sector could sustain over 95,000 jobs.
However, the road to a trillion-dollar global market is rarely a straight line. Microsoft, a foundational buyer for Canadian credits, recently announced a pause on new agreements. The news came just days after the tech giant finalized a major deal with an Indigenous-owned bioenergy project in Saskatchewan. This sudden hesitation has sent a chill through a market that previously viewed Big Tech’s appetite as bottomless.
Physical and political hurdles remain equally stubborn. Infrastructure for transporting captured gas is still in its infancy, and fragmented provincial markets create a confusing patchwork of prices. Despite these Growing Pains, the strategy remains clear. By aligning private capital with federal policy, Canada is betting that the world’s need for clean air will eventually outweigh the temporary jitters of its biggest customers.
