A landmark atlas maps CO2 storage potential across Quebec and Atlantic Canada, opening new territory for Canada's growing CCS sector
24 Apr 2026

Eastern Canada is stepping into the carbon storage spotlight. Canadian Discovery Ltd. has announced the upcoming release of the Geological Carbon Storage Atlas of Eastern Canada, the first fully integrated mapping of CO2 storage potential across Quebec and Atlantic Canada. The Atlas publishes April 28, 2026, filling a data gap that has long held back CCS investment in the region.
Co-funded by Natural Resources Canada and Montreal-based carbon removal developer Deep Sky, the research assessed deep saline aquifers and depleted hydrocarbon reservoirs across the region. The team evaluated storage volumes, containment risks, and cost estimates, producing findings that will be freely available to industry, government, Indigenous groups, and the public.
The scope of the challenge is significant. The International Energy Agency projects that up to 95% of all captured CO2 worldwide will require permanent underground storage. Without reliable subsurface data, developers cannot site projects, regulators cannot approve them, and investors will not fund them. This Atlas provides the foundation those decisions require.
The findings confirm that Eastern Canada holds geologically credible CO2 storage capacity, though variability across basins is substantial. Some sites suit large-scale, hub-style developments. Others are better matched to smaller projects serving localized industrial emitters who lack access to Alberta's established storage infrastructure.
Deep Sky, which co-funded the research, is already using the data to advance pre-feasibility work for a planned carbon storage site in Becancour, Quebec. For the Montreal-based developer backed by over $75 million from investors including Investissement Quebec, the Atlas represents a direct acceleration of its project pipeline.
Canada's CCUS sector has long been anchored in the west. This research signals that the east is ready to follow.
